From the moment my train left for Nantes, I began to experience a different kind of rock wonder. The mesmerizing atmosphere on either side of the railway line began to create a different excitement in me.
The same thing happened with this city, the refreshing feeling that comes after stepping foot in any new city. I had heard a lot about the city of Nantes. ToggleExploring the Vibrant Streets of Bouffay
The first thing I did was walk around the Bouffay district in the heart of the city. Basically this area felt like a portal to another era for me. Here I saw quaint medieval streets, half-timbered houses, and lively cafes.
I tried to grasp the craftsmanship of all the places with fascinated eyes. Discovering each of its narrow alleys, charming little boutiques and many hidden alleys included the most beautiful moments.
Bouffay has an extraordinary magical power that is hard to describe. This energy is definitely alive and well. You will soon realize that this place is actually a place to enjoy. Here, locals, and tourists come to clear their minds.
Once while walking, my eyes were stuck in a cafe. I enter this nicely decorated cafe and sit in a corner. Then I order a pain au chocolat and a café créme and try to get a deep sense of the people and environment of This cafe.
Why people are spending hours and hours in this place in such a fascinating way was basically this question. These moments seemed to pass much more slowly and one could feel the states clear. So if you’re wondering *what to do in Nantes*, start from here.
A Marvel of Machinery: Les Machines de l’île
One of the most unique and fun *things to do in Nantes* is visiting *Les Machines de l’île*. I have never seen anything like this until now. Imagine a giant mechanical animal—a giant walking elephant, for example, that you can actually ride.
I felt like I was stepping on an image in my dream, really part of steampunk fantasy. I rode the elephant here and it was very gracefully slowly splashing water through the park. These moments were truly unforgettable. From little children to adults were running around in awe of enjoyment.
You cannot compare these scenes with anything else. Whether you come alone or with the family, this place is a unique experience for everyone.
Château des Ducs de Bretagne: History Brought to Life
One of my favorite historical spots in Nantes was the *Château des Ducs de Bretagne*. This impressive fort is located right in the heart of the city and walking through its halls felt like stepping back in time. This fort has been beautifully restored.
The museum inside the fort clearly showed me the ancient history of the city. As I am passionate about ancient history, this subject fascinated me. Also, the fort really helped me to get a true picture of the history of this city.
The most interesting fact is that this fort is free to enter. Hence it is a budget-friendly tourist destination for tourists. Whether you are a history buff or a nature buff, the château is a must-see.
A Taste of Nantes: The City’s Culinary Delights
Now let’s talk about food. No city in France is complete without describing its food. The city of Nantes did not disappoint me in this regard either.
One dish, in particular, stands out: a perfectly seared duck breast served with crispy potatoes and rich, dark jus. Its flavour was amazing and the incredible softness brought a different taste to the mouth.
But for those who want something more casual, the city of Nantes also offers something more varied. I couldn’t resist grabbing a crêpe from a local stand. It was filled with gooey, melted cheese and ham. This is what I was enjoying while walking along the river. The ingredients are simple and few, but very tasty.
Discovering Nantes’ Green Spaces
What I admire most about Nantes is its abundance of parks and gardens. One afternoon, I spent a few hours at the botanical garden, Jardin des Plantes. Believe me, there were a few hours of full relaxation for me that day. It is an oasis-type garden in the city.
The garden is full of greenery, and colourful flowers and has some beautiful buildings and sculptures. This place is truly made as an ideal place for tourists to relax, read a book or have a peaceful picnic.
As I walked along the cobblestone path I could hear the chirping of birds, the soft chirping of birds. Only the leaves, the hum of nature’s harmony can be heard here. Far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this place is a paradise for a quiet, nature-loving person like me.
This place is a great way to break the rules of all the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy real travel. Leave some time and come here and lose yourself.
Getting Around Nantes
It was easy to get lost in the heart of Nantes. I would like to thank the efficient tram system from the bottom of my heart. Not once did I feel the need to rent a car while driving around the city. I am enjoying the beauty of many places on foot.
Also used public transport in some cases, which were not only affordable but also much easier to navigate. The frequent and punctual trams were very helpful. And because all the destinations are near, the hustle and bustle was the most charming.
If you are on a tight budget, I would definitely recommend using public transport. It charges around 5 euros for a day and allows unlimited travel, which is very affordable. You can easily travel from one end of the city to the other.
Renting a car and waiting for the car is a costly and time-consuming affair. So using public transport is a tourist-friendly and environment-friendly solution.

The city of Nantes fascinated me in the best way. It’s not glamorous like Paris or sun-soaked like Nice. Its different features are the reason why tourists are attracted to it. It is a city of unpretentious, strong character. Also, there is a blend of modern innovations and historical attractions.
