Nantes City Overview: History and Geography

Nantes History and Geography

Nantes boasts a rich and diverse history that dates back over a thousand years. Once the capital of the Duchy of Brittany, the city played a significant role in French history, particularly during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Its strategic location along the Loire River allowed it to thrive as a major port, facilitating trade and cultural exchange.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Nantes became a hub for shipbuilding and the slave trade, which significantly contributed to its economic prosperity. The city’s historical significance is reflected in its architecture, with grand buildings and monuments that tell stories of its past.

Geographically, Nantes is situated in western France, about 50 kilometers from the Atlantic coast.

It is the largest city in the Pays de la Loire region and the sixth-largest city in France. The city is characterized by its beautiful riverside landscapes, lush green spaces, and a charming blend of modern and historical architecture. The Île de Nantes and surrounding areas offer picturesque views and a vibrant atmosphere that attracts both locals and tourists alike.

My Top 5  Picks to Visit

  1. Château des Ducs de Bretagne (Castle of the Dukes of Brittany)
  2. Les Machines de l’île (The Machines of the Isle)
  3. Île de Nantes (Island of Nantes)
  4. Passage Pommeraye
  5. Jardin des Plantes (Botanical Garden)

1. Château des Ducs de Bretagne

Château des Ducs de Bretagne

Overview

Located in Nantes, the Château des Ducs de Bretagne is a medieval castle that would convince anybody of the historical prominence of this city.

This castle not only serves as a point of observation due to its imposing walls and moats, but it also contains the Nantes History Museum, where one is able to learn a great deal about the city’s origin.

My Experience

stepping out into the ancient corridors of the castle, I began to believe that I was standing in a middle ages era. The exhibits were quite interesting and I particularly enjoyed the information concerning the Dukes of Brittany. People are known to frequent the place for this purpose which makes it a buzzing place full of history and culture.

2. Les Machines de l’île

Les Machines de l'île

Overview

Get ready to be astounded by what Les Machines de l’île has in store since it features a unique combination of art and engineering. Nothing like this is located anywhere in the world.

This includes giant mechanical animals where an enormous elephant that walks and squirts water can be found. It is based on the inspirations of the works of Jules Vernes and on Nantes’s industrial past.

My Experience

When I watched the elephant swaying and stomping, I couldn’t suppress the laughter of watching it. Watching once again the children’s joyful faces as they turned around on the sea horse carousel was soothing. The vibe in this place is child-like and even the creative juices seem to be overflowing. An attraction for the whole family and every child at heart!

3. Île de Nantes

Île de Nantes

Overview

Île de Nantes is an interesting area as it shows the modern aspect of the city. It is also a place where most of the action is as I always say there are modern architecture art installations as well as rim parks. If you take a walk or bicycle along the river that is provided the view is quite rare. It is definitely a place that is worthwhile for a stroll or bike ride.

My Experience

I spent a pleasant afternoon here sunbathing and having a picnic by the water. The natives of the place are very active, jogging around, biking and taking in the weather. It looked like a center of activity and I enjoyed the location as it was totally different to the historical sites I had been to.

4. Pont de Pommeraye

Pont de Pommeraye

Overview

All of the above can be experienced at the Passage Pommeraye, which is a stunning olden-day shopping corridor that was built back in the 1800s. It has it all from exquisite architectural designs to tiny shops selling an array of goods, the place is perfect for retail therapy or simply marveling at its beauty.

My Experience

As I strolled through the corridor, I had the feeling that I was in a time machine and went back in time. The passage was lined by so many stores – some selling exquisite handicrafts, others some great food items.

Obviously, I had to sample a few artisanal cheeses and bring a couple of them back to the hotel with me. The feel of the place is quite mesmerizing due to the calming light coming through the glass ceiling.

5. Jardin des Plantes

Jardin des Plantes

Overview

While all of the above points highlight different aspects of the capitol that deserve visiting, Jardin des Plantes stands out as well. One of the largest in the city, the greens are a perfect quiet place to take shelter and escape from the cities’ constant noise pollution.

Boasting over ten thousand types of plants within its expansive area, the spot exudes beauty and is ideal for taking a peaceful stroll or having a picnic inside the breathtaking flowers.

My Experience

Drifting away into the realm of the gardens while engaged in meditative thoughts brought a soothing smile to the woman’s face, with her eyes lost in the chaos of colors from the flowers and plants around.

It was glorious, almost like an amicable conversation, as she reminisced how after a series of unfortunate events, everything eventually became calm. This place offers shelter to the natives as they travel here to seek repose as well as indulge themselves in a number of events throughout the calendar.
